COURT HOUSE – June 12: Cape May County reported six new COVID-19 cases today, along with one new fatality, a 71-year-old Lower Township woman.
The county also corrected the report from June 8, noting that the reported death of a 55-year-old West Cape May man was, in fact, from Lower Township. West Cape May, once again, has not experienced a virus-related death since the outbreak began March 18.
The new cases included four community-based infections, with two in Middle Township and one each in Upper Township and Wildwood. The remaining two new cases were in long-term care facilities in Middle Township and Ocean City.
The county’s total now stands at 671, still the lowest case count among the state’s 21 counties. The number of individuals off quarantine is 442, an increase of seven since yesterday and two-thirds of all cases. There are 173 still active cases. The death toll is now 56.
Today, three days from the start of Gov. Phil Murphy’s Stage 2 in his Road Back plan, the state announced 48 new fatalities and 495 additional confirmed cases. The state is still second only to New York, with 166,164 cases and 12,489 deaths.
According to Murphy, the state’s retransmission rate, the number of individuals likely to be infected by each new case, remains below one, at .66, an encouraging sign for the expansion of the reopening.
Murphy announced that libraries can begin pick-up service. He also said that in-person summer school could commence July 6. The easing of restrictions in each case will be subject to social distancing and sanitization requirements.
