1st Baby Born in SIC Since 1977

By Camille Sailer

CORRECTION: This story incorrectly stated that the last birth, in Sea Isle City, occurred at Mercy Hospital, in 1977. The hospital closed in October 1969, according to Abby Powell, president, Sea Isle City Historical Society and Museum.
SEA ISLE CITY – It took about 43 years for Sea Isle City to experience the birth of a baby on its sandy soil. The last birth occurred at Mercy Hospital, in 1977, which has since closed.
Lucianna Golato did not want to wait until mother Jeanne Golato arrived at the hospital. As a result, the municipality’s emergency medical team, aided by the police department, was called Jan. 27 at 3:42 p.m., and assisted Jeanne Golato to deliver Lucianna Golato, emerging in a complicated position around 3:52 p.m.
In a ceremony recognizing the event, held during Sea Isle City Council’s Feb. 11 meeting, father Joe Golato said, “Without the incredible help of the EMS (emergency medical services) team and police, I don’t know what we would have done. I am forever grateful that they brought my little baby girl safely into the world.”
Mayor Leonard Desiderio commended the Sea Isle City team for going “way above and beyond the call of duty,” and presented “big” sister Briella Golato the key to the city.
