‘Frolic of the Beards’ contest kickoff

By On Deck Staff

On Feb. 15, the 400th Anniversary of Cape May will launch the Frolic of the Beards contest at the Half Moon Gala, which begins at 7 p.m., Congress Hall in Cape May.
All males age 18 and over are eligible to enter. The contest ends on July 4, when trophies will be awarded in the following categories: Most Authentic-Looking Beard (Henry Hudson Style); Longest Beard; Best Overall Beard (neat, well-groomed, balanced); and Scraggliest Beard. Goatees and full beards are eligible, while moustache-only is not.
There is a $5 entry fee, and registrations can be obtained at the Half Moon Gala or at capemay400.info. Additional forms will be available after Feb. 15, at the Greater Cape May Chamber of Commerce and participating local salons including John the Barber, Ray’s Barber Shop, Accent on Beauty and Artizan.
Tickets are still available for the Half Moon Gala. Enjoy a buffet dinner, cocktails, and music.
The gala marks the official coronation of the 400th Anniversary ‘King and Queen of Cape May,’ Charles “Bud” Swain and Patricia Milligan. The coronation will include an honor guard and a Victorian fashion show.
Dress code is black-tie optional and tickets are $50 and can be purchased by calling 609-884-5508.
The anniversary commemorates the 1609 voyage of Henry Hudson, who discovered Cape May as his boat became stuck on a sand bar during a voyage. The 400th Anniversary planning committee has scheduled special events throughout 2009 to celebrate Cape May as the nation’s oldest seashore resort.
