NORTH CAPE MAY – This morning, Sept. 26 at approximately 2:20 a.m., a small exhaust stack fire was discovered aboard the M/V Delaware while the vessel was at the Cape May Terminal pier. No passengers were on board and no one was hurt.
Preliminary investigation indicates that the fire is believed to have been started by an ember in the exhaust stack of the vessel’s port engine.
“The fire was similar to a home chimney fire,” said Heath Gehrke, Director of Ferry Operations, in a release. “Thanks to the efforts of veteran Cape May – Lewes Ferry night engineer, Joe Wardach, who discovered the fire and the local fire departments, led by Town Bank, who immediately responded to the scene, the fire was quickly extinguished. Unfortunately, the vessel will miss its scheduled departures today, Sept. 26 while repairs and clean-up efforts are conducted.”
Due to the incident, the following departures are cancelled today, Sept. 26: 8:30 a.m. and noon departures from New Jersey and the 10:15 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. departures from Delaware. For additional information on departures, please visit www.cmlf.com or call 800-64 FERRY.
