Oil Spill Causes Hazardous Road Conditions

By Harry B. Scheeler Jr.

MARMORA– A large fuel spill caused slick road conditions along much of CR-610 causing a multi-agency response on Nov 13.
According to Marmora Deputy Fire Chief Russell Barham, a firefighter from out-of-town reported an oil-based slick at Vernon Road and Roosevelt Blvd. that was causing motorist to loose control.
That report prompted a response from the Marmora Fire Department for a possible hazardous materials assignment around 7:40 p.m.
When fire fighters arrived, they detected an odor of diesel or home heating oil, and an oil slick that extended down Roosevelt Blvd. They were unable to determine exactly what was spilled or the origin of the spill, according to Barham.
The County Road Department was requested to the scene to spread sand over the area.
Other calls came in reporting the same road hazards down CR-610 throughout Upper Township and Dennis Township ending at CR-610 and RT- 550 in Woodbine.
The Tuckahoe Fire Department was detailed to assist with the spill in there coverage area of Tuckahoe and Pettersburg.
The Department of Health was also notified and responded to the scene.
The Upper Township Rescue Squad was on standby, however, no accidents occurred due to the spill.
“We did what we had to too make the area safe,” said Barham.
The incident is under investigation by State Police Woodbine Station.
