Cabin Burns; Man Suffers Smoke Inhalation

By Herald Staff

ERMA — About 9 p.m. on Oct. 27, Lower Township Police Department received a report of a structure fire in the Shadetree Village Cabin Rental Complex off Seashore Road.
When the first police officers arrived, they reported heavy smoke coming from a small cabin in the complex.
They found Chris Hickman, 18, of Shadetree Village sitting on the ground near the cabin, suffering from smoke inhalation. He said he believed that someone was still inside the burning cabin, and that he had attempted to extinguish the blaze with a fire extinguisher.
Hearing that, Officers William Barcas and Ryan Hansberry entered the cabin. They remained low, and quickly determined there was no one else inside the cabin before leaving, due to heavy smoke conditions.
Hickman was transported by Lower Township Rescue Squad to Cape Regional Medical Center where he was treated for smoke inhalation.
Erma Volunteer Fire Department responded and quickly doused the flames.
The fire was investigated by members of Lower Township Police Department and the Cape May County Fire Marshal’s Office to determine the origin of the blaze, which was deemed accidental due to electrical wiring, according to a police release.
