COURT HOUSE – The Agriculture and Natural Resources Department of Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Cape May County will host a presentation on the Spotted Lanternfly May 9 from 7 to 8 p.m. at Rutgers Cooperative Extension, 355 Court House-South Dennis Road, Court House, New Jersey.
According to a release, this program is part of a new series, Informational Talks for the Home Gardener, designed to provide free, one-hour informational classes for the public.
This class will feature guest speaker Joseph Zoltowski, director, Division of Plant Industry, New Jersey Department of Agriculture, who will provide information on how to recognize the Spotted Lanternfly, what to do if one is seen, and how to report a sighting.
The Spotted Lanternfly, an invasive planthopper, is native to China, India, Vietnam, and introduced to Korea where it has become a major pest.
The Spotted Lanternfly has been discovered in Berks County, Pa. and it is believed that this insect has the potential to greatly impact the grape, hop, small fruit, vegetable and horticultural industries in Cape May County.
Jennifer Sawyer, Rutgers Master Gardener Coordinator for Cape May County, stated, “Early detection is necessary to protect agriculture in New Jersey since the Spotted Lanternfly can be easily transported from the quarantined area in Pennsylvania.”
