Local Group Promotes Awareness of the Beach Plum Tree

By Harry B. Scheeler Jr.

WOODBINE– The Beach Plum Association of Cape May County planted several Beach Plum trees in front of the Woodbine branch of the Cape May County Library on Friday, Nov 20.
The local association hopes to bring awareness to the tree which is native to New Jersey’s shores. The tree grows in sandy soils and can be found on many of the local sand dunes here in Cape May County.
The Beach Plum is grown commercially for its fruit which is used in a variety of food products. The fruit has been used to make jellies, wines, and preserves since colonial times.
The local Beach Plum Association planted an orchard at the county’s technical high school. Culinary Arts students use the harvested fruit in class.
You can learn more about the Beach Plum tree here at The Beach Plum Association of Cape May County.
