Coast Guard Responds to Wilmington Fuel Spill

By Herald Staff

WILMINGTON — The Coast Guard and multiple agencies are responding Thursday to a fuel oil spill in the water after a 623-foot freight carrier punctured its fuel tank near Pier 1 in the Port of Wilmington in Wilmington, Del.
The Coast Guard received a call at 8:40 a.m. from the captain aboard the Honor reporting that they punctured a fuel tank while moored at the Port of Wilmington.
An estimated amount of 1,300 gallons spilled into the water. The hole in the tank is plugged and the spill is contained.
Coast Guard crews were on scene working with members of Clean Venture and the Delaware Department of Natural Resources to contain and clean the spill.
The cause of the spill is under investigation.
