TOWNSENDS INLET — Two Cape May County beach communities flipped a coin today (Wednesday, April 21) for first dibs at sand from a joint beach fill project, and Avalon was victorious over Sea Isle City.
Avalon Mayor Martin Pagliughi and Sea Isle City Mayor Leonard Desiderio simultaneously flipped identical coins, with sides representing both municipalities. On the first flip both coins landed on the Avalon side giving the first truckloads of sand to the borough that’s “cooler by a mile.” The coin flip took place on the Townsends Inlet bridge, which links the two communities.
“This emergency beach fill project is desperately needed,” Pagliughi said. “Both communities have experienced significant beach loss due to a very active storm season, and beaches are needed for the protection of public and private property.”
The project is to be completed by Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company, of Illinois, and will have a total cost of $10.4 million. Of that total, Sea Isle City will finance $5.9 million and Avalon about $4.5 million. Sea Isle will receive 700,000 cubic yards of sand for beaches from 73rd to 94th streets. Avalon will receive 500,000 cubic yards for beaches from 9th to 26th streets.
“Our residents and visitors will be able to enjoy these beautiful new beaches during the summer of 2010,” Desiderio said.
