Video of DWI Arrest of Police Officer Surfaces

VILLAS – A video of a Lower Township police lieutenant, now retired, being arrested for allegedly driving while intoxicated (DWI) in 2018, was published to YouTube June 22, 2019, The Press of Atlantic City reports.
The video, published by YouTube channel operator Real World Police, shows Lt. John Chew, 48, struggling to complete field sobriety tests administered by officers during a traffic stop conducted less than a mile from his home April 27, 2018.
Chew failed two sobriety tests and was placed under arrest, with a blood alcohol content of .36%, according to the report. The legal limit in New Jersey is .08%.
Chew was charged with DWI and failure to maintain lane.
Chew told The Press of Atlantic City that he retired April 1, 2019. He was placed on administrative leave after his arrest, according to the police report.
According to the Press’ report, Capt. Martin Biersbach said an Internal Affairs investigation, which began immediately after the incident, has not been completed pending Chew’s retirement filings.
Chew started working with the Lower Township Police Department in 1995. He was promoted to lieutenant three months prior to his arrest.
State pension data (https://data.nj.gov) lists Chew as an active pension member with a recorded salary of $127,242.
