COURT HOUSE – Christopher R. Small, 41, of Millville was sentenced to 25 years in prison by Superior Court Judge J. Christopher Gibson Dec. 20.
The announcement was made by County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland in a Dec. 23 release.
Small’s sentence is related to an Oct. 3, 2018, drug-induced death investigation of Kevin MacFarlane, 54, of Avalon. The investigation was begun by New Jersey State Police troopers and detectives from the Woodbine Station.
Small was sentenced to 20 years in prison with no early release for MacFarlane’s death, and a consecutive five-year term for distribution of a controlled dangerous substance.
Sutherland stated that his office, as well as all law enforcement agencies throughout the county, will investigate and prosecute those who engage in the distribution of controlled dangerous substances, especially those individuals who distribute CDS which results in the death of another.
Sentencing for Christopher Verity, a co-defendant in this drug-induced death investigation, is scheduled for Jan. 16, 2020.
Sutherland recognized the investigative efforts of officers and detectives involved with the investigation along with Assistant Prosecutor Edward Shim, who prosecuted the case.
Sutherland urged residents to report information regarding any criminal activity in the community and that the information can be reported anonymously through the Cape May County Sheriff’s Office Tip Line at cmcsheriff.net and click on an anonymous tip, or through the Cape May County Crime Stoppers at 609-465-2800 or the County Prosecutor’s Office at 609-465-1135.
