News Release
Results Statewide Child Support Sweep
COURT HOUSE — Cape May County Sheriff Gary Schaffer announced the results of the Sheriff’s Office participation in the Sheriff’s Association of New Jersey Statewide efforts to apprehend delinquent parents for failure to pay their court ordered child support.
According to Schaffer, the Sheriff’s Office executed 34 arrest warrants that resulted in the arrest of 28 individuals and the collections of $13,019.08 in back support payments. Additionally four other persons were arrested as fugitives for failure to appear in court.
“Several weeks ago our office informed the public of stepped up enforcement of outstanding warrants issued for failure to pay court ordered child support payments. I encouraged people who had outstanding obligations to contact probation and bring those payments in order. This is the first of many enforcement sweeps that will be conducted by my office,” Schaffer said in a release.
“With the new child support system, NJKIDS, operating throughout New Jersey, I can see a greater push in this area. I would encourage the state to integrate this system with our states wanted system, ATS and ACS to reduce steps needed to run wanted persons.”
“I will be starting a list of persons on our Sheriff’s Office web site who have outstanding warrants for failure to pay child support and hopefully using public media, I am asking for the public’s assistance in locating these persons. I want to thank the public for the outstanding response and tips we have received that have lead to arrests of over a dozen persons and clearing 9 of our top ten most wanted criminal fugitives. I anticipate the same great cooperation we have experienced to date,” according to Schaffer.
I look forward to our enhanced cooperation with our County Probation Department as well as these other steps to target parents who have failed to appear at court hearings to pay their child support order or for medical support.
“I want to commend all the officers of the Cape May County Sheriff’s Office and the Cape May county Probation Department who did an outstanding job during the last few days in addition to being responsible for their day to day functions. The cooperation between these two offices was outstanding and directly reflected in the results that enabled Cape May County to collect the third most outstanding payments in the State of New Jersey,” said Sheriff Schaffer.
