PRESS RELEASE FROM LOWER TOWNSHIP POLICE:
On 05-14-09 at approximately 1:30 pm, Lower Township Police Officers responded to the area of Clubhouse and Fernwood Roads in the Townbank Section of Lower Township for the report of a bicyclist struck by a motor vehicle.
Investigation on scene determined that Anthony Troupe, age 47, of the Shelton Motel in Rio Grande, disregarded a stop sign and ran his bike into the side of a Dodge Ram pick up truck.
Troupe also appeared highly intoxicated at the time.
Troupe was in the company of Paul Shibles, age 21, of the 900 Block of Carol Avenue in Erma. Shibles had also been riding a bike with Troupe at the time.
Troupe was treated on scene by Lower Township Rescue Squad and due to an unresponsive condition, was airlifted to the Cooper Medical Center in Camden.
Both subjects had property on them that was later determined to have been stolen from a home in the 1000 Block of Shore Drive in North Cape May, along with the two (2) bicycles that were also determined to have been stolen from that location.
Paul Shibles was charged with Burglary and Theft and was lodged in the Cape May County Jail on $15,000 cash bail.
Upon being released from the hospital, Anthony Troupe, who drank a bottle of Vodka while burglarizing the home, was charged with Burglary and Theft. In addition, he was issued a motor vehicle summons for Disregarding a Stop Sign on the stolen bicycle, which led to the accident.
Troupe was lodged in the Cape May County Jail on $20,000 cash bail.
The investigation into the incident was conducted by Lower Township Patrol Officers, Pat Greene and CJ Ryan, with the assistance of Detective Chris Lambert.
