Police Charge Four after Fleeing from Traffic Stop

OCEAN CITY — On Jan. 7, Ocean City police arrested four young men on various charges after they fled from an attempted traffic stop.
At approximately 3:30 a.m., police observed a black Hyundai traveling at a high rate of speed through a construction area on Central Avenue. The vehicle made a stop in the 3200 block of Asbury Avenue to meet with another vehicle described as an S-10 pickup.
The Hyundai then picked up a passenger on Asbury Avenue, noticed the police vehicle and drove off at a high rate of speed disregarding two stop signs. Police pursued the vehicle and then its occupants once they pulled over and fled on foot. After a brief foot pursuit, police apprehended Arthur T. Wagely, 19, of Ocean City.
A short time later the S-10 pickup truck was observed driving in the area. The front passenger of the pickup truck was identified as the passenger of the Hyundai that had fled on foot.
At the conclusion of the investigation, four persons were taken into custody on various charges.
Wagely was charged with eluding police, obstruction, resisting arrest, DWI, DWI under 21 and suspended driver. He was lodged in county jail in lieu of $20,000 bail.
Jonathan J. Smith, 22, was charged with obstruction and released with a summons. Charles A. Michalek, 19, was charged with DWI under age 21 and careless driving and released on a summons. Cory T. Kott, 19, was charged with contempt of court and released on bail.
Smith, Michalek and Kott all reside in Egg Harbor Township.
The investigation was conducted by; Patrolmen Anthony Fearnhead, Robert Koob, Jeff Doto, and Dave Rowland as well as Sgt. Brian Trostle.
