Off Duty Delaware State Trooper Stops Robbery in Progress

RIO GRANDE– The Middle Township Police Department received a call of a fight at the bus stop on Route 47 near 5th Street in Rio Grande, on Friday, July 31,. Upon arrival, officers found the accused John Armstrong 40, of Rio Grande, being held down by an off duty Delaware State Trooper, Cpl. Damian F. Fuscellaro, a 13-year veteran.
The investigation revealed that Armstrong had picked the pockets of the victim who was sleeping and stole a large sum of money. Fuscellaror who was stopped in traffic noticed the theft and told Armstrong to leave the victim alone. Armstrong argued with Fuscellaro and continued to go through the pockets of the victim. When Fuscellaro attempted to physically stop Armstrong, he struggled and attempted to flee the scene.
Armstrong later attempted by force to escape the custody of Middle Twp. police officers. Armstrong was charged with Robbery and Resisting arrest and was transported to Cape May County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bail. Ptl. Tracey Super is investigating the case.
