STONE HARBOR – Stone Harbor Police were dispatched for a reported shoplifting from an employee of a business located on the 200 Block of 96th Street Friday, July 10 at 8:35 p.m.
Officer Matthew Minutolo was advised that a store employee was following the suspects. Officers stopped two suspects entering a store at 94th and Third Avenue. The two female suspects, identified by the store employee and later found to be mother and daughter, were placed under arrest for shoplifting.
The two women, Shelly Santos, 47, and Carissa Jannotti, 18, both of Maybrook, N.Y., were found to be in possession of numerous shoplifted items as well as portable radios. Jannotti was further found to be in possession of a substance believed to be marijuana. Santos was reportedly observed attempting to discard clothing merchandise behind houses as the store employee followed.
Santos and Jannotti were transported to the Stone Harbor Police Department for processing. A foot patrol officer reported that he issued a meter ticket to a New York registered vehicle on the 200 Block of 95th Street. This vehicle was registered to Santos. Investigating officers located the vehicle and observed additional items within the vehicle believed to have been stolen. The vehicle was impounded and a search warrant was sought and subsequently authorized by Stone Harbor Municipal Court Judge John Fowler and the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office.
A subsquent search of Santos’s vehicle revealed over 140 items believed to have been shoplifted from various stores and totaling over $700 and a substance believed to be marijuana.
Criminal warrants were sought and authorized to be issued for Santos and Jannotti for third degree indictable shoplifting, conspiracy, and possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Bail was set at $20,000, with a 10 percent option for Santos and Jannotti. Unable to post bail, Santos and Jannotti were transported to the Cape May County Correctional Facility.
Investigation was assisted and is being continued by Detective Sgt. Robert Walker and Detective David Hartzell.
This matter is pending review by the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office.
