COLD SPRING — Lower Township Police Department, in recent time, has seen a rise in theft of metal due to the high prices paid by recyclers, according to a press release.
The most recent theft that occurred March 15 has police concerned that scrappers are going to an all-new level in trying to obtain product to sell.
That alleged theft took place behind Tranquility housing development along the Seashore Lines Railroad tracks. Scrappers removed plates and spikes from the track area, which could cause the tracks to shift, and the train to possibly derail.
Police located the subjects in the process of removing the items and additional items that had already been removed were located in the party’s vehicle.
The suspects were identified as William J. Rambo, 19, of 100 block of Bayridge Road, North Cape May and
Charles Omrod, 18, of the 100 block of Beachhurst, North Cape May.
Both were arrested and transported to the Lower Township Police Department and charged with theft, interference with transportation and vandalizing railroad property.
Both were charged on a warrant and released on their own recognizance.
Patrolman Patrick Greene, Detective Chris Lambert and Corporal Kevin Boyle investigated the case.
