WILDWOOD CREST – Wildwood Crest Police were called to the 7100 block of Pacific Ave. on a report of a man shooting a BB gun at cars and people Aug. 26.
Sgt. Robert Lloyd arrived to find Lawrence Mathis III, 46, in possession of a paintball gun, actively shooting at pedestrians and moving vehicles. Sgt. Lloyd was able to apprehend Mathis but not before Mathis pointed the gun at Sgt. Lloyd. Mathis was charged with possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a weapon, aggravated assault, and being a certain person not to possess any weapon.
Mathis was lodged at the Cape May County Correctional Center in lieu of $75,000 bail. No one was injured during the event.
The charges and allegations contained in the complaint are merely accusations and the defendant is considered innocent unless and until proven guilty.
