Lower Police Seek Help in Identifying Rape Suspect

By Jack Fichter

ERMA – Lower Township police received a report of a rape September 23 in the area of Bayshore Road and Hudson Avenue in Villas.
The victim was hesitant to come forward at the time it had occurred which was September 7 at approximately 9:30 pm. After discussing it with a neighbor, the victim who is elderly came forward and reported it to police.
Detectives upon interviewing the victim discovered that during the attack a passerby/Good Samaritan responded to her screams and the actor fled. Upon approaching the victim, the passerby asked if she was OK and did she need help. The victim responded that she was fine and left the area returning to her residence nearby.
Police are hoping that the citizen who responded to her screams may be able to help identify the suspect who is believed to have longer style hair and is a white male with no noticeable accent. Prior to raping the victim, the suspect demanded money from the victim when he grabbed her from behind and threw her onto a grassy area near Blitz’s Market.
Anyone with information may contact the Lower Township Police Safe Neighborhood’s Tip Line at 609-886-1619 extension 156 or the Cape May County Crime Stoppers at 609-465- 2800. Information will remain confidential and may be reported anonymously.
The case is under investigation by Detective First Class Mel Hedum.
