Lower Police Arrest Suspect for Kicking In Door of Occupied Home

By Herald Staff

NORTH CAPE MAY — On Sunday, Nov. 23, the Lower Township Police at approximately 5:30 a.m. responded to a report of a male entering a home on Widgeon Way by kicking in the door.
According to a police report, the sound of the door being kicked in woke the occupants. Upon discovering the home was occupied, the suspect stated that it was cold outside before fleeing.
Police said the area was searched for the suspect and a K-9 unit from the Cape May County Sheriffs Department was called.
Police personnel on scene located and arrested the suspect before the K-9 unit arrived on scene, the report stated.
Police spoke with the victims/occupants who were home at the time of the crime and had barricaded the door prior to police arrival.
The entry appears to be a random act and there was no connection between the occupants and the suspect, police said.
The suspect was identified as a Jesse M. Markley, 22, of the 400 block of Sheridan Boulevard, Erma.
Markley was charged with burglary and Judge David DeWeese set bail at $15,000 cash. Markley was then transported to the Cape May County Prosecutor’s in lieu of bail.
Patrolman William Barcas, Patrolman Donald Vanaman, Patrolman Michael Szemcsak and Sergeant Dave Adams investigated the case.
