Lower Police Arrest Ex Convict on Drug Charges

By Joe Hart

VILLAS — During a routine motor vehicle stop, Lower Township police found several different kinds of illicit drugs on a Millville man, who previously served time in state prison on drug charges.
On Jan. 13 at about 5 p.m., police stopped a motor vehicle on Bayshore Road for an equipment violation. According to a police release, upon approaching the vehicle the officers immediately smelled the odor of burnt marijuana.
Romaine Rhett, 34, of the 800 block of Oakview Avenue, Miliville, a passenger in the vehicle, was discovered to have an ecstasy pill in his possession and was placed under arrest.
A search subsequent to his arrest disclosed that Rhett had additional narcotics in his possession, specifically six bags of heroin, a bag of marijuana, a small bag of powder cocaine and a large bag of crack cocaine.
Rhett was charged with possession of heroin, marijuana and cocaine as well as possession with intent to distribute heroin and cocaine.
Due to the weight of the cocaine Rhett was charged with a second-degree crime that can carry a term of five to 10 years incarceration.
Rhett was lodged in county jail in lieu of $25,000 bail set by Municipal Court Judge David DeWeese.
Detectives Chis Lambert and Mel Hedum and Patrolman Dallas Bohn investigated the case.
According to the state Department of Corrections, Rhett was previously incarcerated from Feb. 25, 2005 until Nov. 20, 2006 for drug distribution on school property. He was paroled from Bayside State Prison in Leesburg, Cumberland County.
