Local Restaurateur Files for Bankruptcy

By Lauren Suit

CAMDEN — Jon Paxton, president of Late Night, Inc. and a local business owner in the Wildwoods, filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy on June 11.
Paxton owns JP Prime, Juan Pablo’s Margarita Bar, Café jonpaul, as well as a construction company.
According to the bankruptcy documents, Late Night Inc. owes the State of New Jersey $44,372.95. In addition, the list of creditors holding the largest unsecured claims includes: US Foodservice located in Philadelphia, Pa., $49,874.12; Atlantic City Electric, $22,817.80; RJM Virtual Media LLC in Wildwood, $6,750; Tony’s Produce of Wildwood, $6,180.92; Vend Lease Company Inc., of Baltimore Md., $36,000; Victorious Promotions in Galloway, $12,951.25; Allied Beverage of Mount Laurel, $8,916.89; Kramer Beverage Company of Hammonton, $7,660.05; Coastal Broadcasting in Wildwood, $21,596.77; Herald Newspapers in Rio Grande, $25,593.76; and Dot Com of Cape May, $10,000.
A meeting of creditors has been scheduled for July 7 in Camden. Paxton will represented by attorney, Andrew Unterlack, who hasn’t returned this newspaper’s calls.
This isn’t the first time the local restaurateur has been in hot water.
Paxton was arrested Feb. 9 for failing to appear in court over a civil lawsuit brought against him by the City of North Wildwood. According to the city’s civil suit, Paxton alleg-edly did not obtain a certificate of occupancy for JP Prime.
JP Prime received at least two temporary certificates of occupancy in 2006, but had been running since then on the expired temporary certificates.
City Solicitor William Kaufman said that city had been in negotiations with Paxton to re-solve the issues. Paxton, he said, had agreed to complete the work necessary to receive his certificate of occupancy by a week before last Thanksgiving.
However, that deadline came and went and the construction office issued an unsafe notice and closed the building. The courts got involved when the city learned that Paxton opened JP Prime despite the order to close.
The judge accepted the city’s final judgment, regarding the restaurant, to keep the building closed for commercial purposes until the certificate of occupancy was issued. JP Prime has yet to open for the season and calls to the restaurant are diverted to voice mail with a mes-sage the restaurant will open in the spring.
The phone has been disconnected to Café jonpaul.
Juan Pablo’s Margarita Bar is open for business as usual.
