CREST HAVEN – Sheriff Gary Schaffer reports that the Correctional Center staff discovered attempts by inmates to have marijuana and tobacco smuggled into the County Correctional Center through legal mail.
Two packages arrived at the Correctional Center Aug. 22, from two different law firms, one from Linwood and one from Jackson. Both of those packages were postmarked from the City of Wildwood and marked and addressed similarly.
The packages were delivered to two inmates, one of whom signed for the package and one refused to receive the package. Once signed for, the package was opened in front of the inmate and was discovered to have series of papers hollowed out containing marijuana and tobacco.
The property was then seized. No one has been charged at this point and the investigation is continuing by the center’s Internal Affairs Unit.
“I continually praise the professionalism of our correctional officers and the difficult job they have maintaining order, keeping inmates safe, reducing contraband while balancing the rights of the inmates. These officers are commended for the job they do in not only this incident but daily,” Schaffer stated in a release.
“We will actively pursue any person attempting to smuggle contraband to inmates at the Correctional Center,” stated Schaffer.
