COURT HOUSE – Superior Court Judge Raymond Batten refused to reduce bail for George Carty III, who is accused of murder in the July 27, 1982, death of Lower Township resident John Attenborough.
Carty has been in county jail since December 2007, despite having an earlier statement by Carty implicating him in the murder thrown out because he wasn’t read his Miranda rights.
According to the Press of Atlantic City, Carty’s attorney David Stefankiewicz argued Friday (Jan. 15) that without the statement the state has no evidence, and Carty should be released on his own recognizance while the Prosecutor’s Office appeals Batten’s ruling.
Attenborough, 57, was once Carty’s boss at the Wildwood Golf and Country Club in Middle Township, the Press stated. His bloodied, beaten body was found on a dirt road in what is now the Tranquility subdivision in Lower Township on July 27, 1982.
