NORTH CAPE MAY – Local business owners along Bayshore Road near the Acme and in the vicinity of the North Cape May Shopping Center reported a surprising flurry of graffiti activity on gas pumps, walls and dumpsters that occurred overnight June 28.
Lt. Donald Vanaman of the Lower Township Police Department described the graffiti as a pattern that they observed and “we have open leads” as to the perpetrator.
The theme of the graffiti seemed to be “Klame 18,” which could be a reference to a heavy metal album, or it may refer to something else. Vanaman stated “It seems to be similar to tagging that comes from cities,” suggesting that the suspect may be a weekender, or vacationer from elsewhere.
Vanaman suggested that the graffiti resembled the work of a city tagger known as “bean dip,” which has subsequently become a mainstream artist. “The use of arrows that resembles a devil’s tail is another indication of an urban source,” according to Vanaman. The graffiti, in white spray paint, was found on businesses between the Conoco gas station, and the Donut Connection on Bayshore Road. More were located behind the Acme in the loading dock areas and on stop signs along Rosehill Avenue westward to the township pool area.
Vanaman acknowledged that police have a person of interest, but that the investigation is ongoing.
