NORTH WILDWOOD- North Wildwood police detectives, along with the United States Secret Service, made three arrests in connection with the production and use of counterfeit money.
On Feb. 20, Kelly Nowacky, 44, and her daughter, Ashley Fuhrmeister, 21, of North Wildwood, were arrested and charged with possession of forgery devices, forgery and conspiracy to commit forgery, according to a release.
Ashley Fuhrmeister is a former Miss North Wildwood.
When she was 19, Fuhrmeister won the crown in the city’s long-running beauty pageant in 2007 from a pool of eight other contestants from Cape May County, winning $500 and the job of representing the city in special events throughout her year-long reign. She had dedicated her one-year reign to raising $30,000 toward research and finding a cure for the deadly Huntington disease.
Fuhrmeister is a graduate of Wildwood High School, where she was a member of the National Honor Society and held a 3.75 GPA.
The investigation also led detectives to John Laughlin of Belleplain, who was also charged with forgery and conspiracy to commit forgery.
During the month of January, Nowacky and Fuhrneister reportedly entered the Wawa convenience store at 303 New Jersey Ave., North Wildwood, and made purchases using counterfeit 50 dollar bills.
Further investigation revealed Nowacky and Fuhrmeister passed counterfeit money at another area store located in Wildwood.
Nowacky and Laughlin were both sent to the Cape May County jail in lieu of $15,000 bail.
After spending a night in jail, officials said Nowacky did make bail. Fuhrmeister was charged and released on her own recognizance.
