BEESLEY’S POINT – The smokestack of the former B.L. England Generating Station will likely not come down until October, Chad Parks, from the Beesley’s Point Development Group (BPDG), said June 5.
Parks confirmed what Upper Township Administrator Gary DeMarzo suggested might happen in a phone call last week.
“They might want to make an event of it,” DeMarzo said.
Parks said BPDG is talking to Upper Township, and there is the possibility of a week-long series of events leading up to the actual demolition.
“It will be more of a public outreach. Sort of a ‘come out, say goodbye’ to the original smokestack,” Parks said.
The B.L. England Generating Station began in 1961 with three generating units: Two burning coal and a third burning bunker C oil. The plant’s smokestack, visible from the Great Egg Harbor Bridge, was altered to make it look like a lighthouse.
Parks said he is now glad the smokestack did not come down when the boilers were imploded April 21 by Controlled Demolitions Inc. He said people will be able to visit the site before it is demolished, saying no one can be onsite on demolition day.
More details will be released when the demolition date is determined.
