Discover “What’s Yum about Beach Plums” at the Nature Center of Cape May
Tuesday, Aug. 28 brings an end-of-summer culinary adventure to the Nature Center of Cape May.
From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., director Gretchen Ferrante will lead the Nature Center’s annual sojourn in search of beach plums. Along the way, Ferrante will offer an entertaining, in depth look at Prunus Maritima, the seaside shrub of coastal New Jersey that produces the wonderful, tart beach plum.
The program includes an expedition (by carpool) to gather beach plums on the dunes of Higbee Beach, a hands-on cooking demonstration, and a sampling of all recipes.
All participants will receive a Beach Plum recipe book, and locally-made Beach Plum jelly will be available for purchase.
Wear comfortable shoes and dress appropriately for an outdoor hike. Sun and insect protection are recommended. Preregistration is strongly encouraged.
The program fee is $10 for adults and $7 for children ages three-12, discounted to $8 adults and $5 children for New Jersey Audubon Society members. There is no fee for children under three years.
For more information, call the Nature Center of Cape May, at 609-898-8848. The Nature Center is located at 1600 Delaware Ave., in Cape May.
