Each year, the Annual Oakley Pro Junior Surfing Competition in Sea Isle City attracts nearly 100 surfers from around the region and the country.
Locally sponsored by Heritage Surf & Sport, in cooperation with the Sea Isle City Department of Community Services, this year’s competition will take place on Aug. 29-30, giving surfers under age 21 competitive experiences before they move on to the World Qualifying Tour.
This year, the fifth annual Pro Junior Tour, which is an Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) sanctioned grade-two event, will take place on Sea Isle’s 40th Street Beach, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
In addition to the surfing, special activities will also entertain spectators on both days of the competition.
There will be free giveaways and autographing-signing sessions, and vendors selling food. Spectators will be entertained each day from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. by a Red Bull Tow-At Demonstration, in which jet-skis tow surfers over the breakers, allowing them the necessary speed to perform amazing stunts and tricks.
According to Heritage, there will also be an Oakley Vision Test Center set up on the grassy lot at JFK Boulevard and Pleasure Avenue adjacent to the competition area. Oakley will also have their hospitality truck at the event and will provide music for all to enjoy.
A $10,000 purse is up for grabs during the 2008 Pro Junior event, and the top surfers may qualify for the Billabong-ASP World Junior Championship next January. The ASP, which is known as the foremost governing body in professional surfing, is headquartered in Australia, and also has regional offices in South Africa, France, Brazil, Japan, Hawaii and California.
There is an entry fee for surfers who wish to participate. For additional information, phone 609-263-3033.
