OCEAN CITY – A Pennsylvania man died at an unguarded beach around lunchtime Sept. 8.
Shawn Reilly, 56, of Thornhurst, Pennsylvania, died while swimming with his 21-year-old son at the 12thStreet beach, according to a release from Ocean City. Reilly’s son tried to save him before he also began to struggle with the strong conditions.
Three lifeguards responded at 12:23 p.m. and brought the two men to the beach. Medics from the Ocean City Beach Patrol began CPR on Reilly, who was unresponsive. Ocean City Fire Department members took over while they transported him to Shore Medical Center. Upon arrival he was declared deceased.
Although the exact cause of the drowning is not clear, strong northeast winds created a rough surf Sept. 8.
