COLD SPRING— On Monday, June 15th, at approximately 12:20 p.m., Lower Township Police Officer, Donald Vanaman, was stationed at the Lower Cape May Regional High School for the graduation ceremonies of the Teitelman Junior High School.
Officer Vanaman then heard screaming coming from the area of the roadway behind the bleachers at the football field.
Officer Vanaman ran to the area and observed two pedestrians lying in the middle of the roadway.
Lower Township Rescue Squad and Paramedics were requested, along with additional police officers.
Investigation on scene determined that Michelle Donoflio, age 33 and her 8 year-old daughter, both of the Villas, were attempting to cross the roadway behind the bleachers when a vehicle proceeding westbound allowed them to cross. However they were both struck by a vehicle that was proceeding eastbound on the roadway.
Witnesses stated that the pedestrians ran out in front of the westbound vehicle, which was traveling at a low rate of speed.
Both victims were treated at the scene by Rescue Squad Members and Paramedics before Michelle Donoflio was airlifted to Altantic City Medical Center with chest trauma, while her daughter was transported to Cape Regional Medical Center with injuries to her extremities.
Officer Vanaman sustained a minor injury to his hand after scaling a 12 foot fence to reach the victims.
