One Killed in Parkway Accident; Driver Charged with DWI

SEAVILLE — An early morning accident on the Garden State Parkway left a 19-year-old man dead and two others hospitalized after the vehicle they were traveling in crashed into a tree.
According to a spokesman for state police, the Mon., July 23 accident occurred at 3:14 a.m. when a Mazda Millenia driving southbound veered off to the right side of the road onto the shoulder, passing across the rumble strips and striking a delineator post.
After striking the post, “The driver over-corrected to the left and ran off the roadway striking a tree with the front passenger hood area,” said Trooper Christopher Kay. “After striking the tree the vehicle rotated counterclockwise, striking the same tree with the rear passenger side. The vehicle came to rest against that tree.”
Kay said none of the occupants were wearing seatbelts when the crash occurred.
The driver, Chaz Desalis, 21, of Court House was entrapped in the vehicle and was extricated by rescue personnel using the Jaws of Life.
Three helicopters were called to the scene to transport the victims to the trauma unit of Atlanticare Regional Medical Center.
The front seat passenger, William Duhadwady, 19, of Havertown, Pa. succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
Chaz Desalis sustained lacerations to his head as well as a spinal injury. According to police he is listed in stable condition.
The rear driver’s side passenger, Stephen Desalis, 22 of Court House suffered two broken arms after being ejected from the vehicle. He is listed in stable condition.
According to police, Chaz Desalis was charged with DWI.
Kay said southbound traffic on the Parkway was closed for two hours while police conducted their investigation into the accident.
Responding were NJ State Police, Seaville Volunteer Fire Department, Marmora Volunteer Fire Department, Upper Township Rescue Squad, Upper Township EMS and Medic 9 and Medic 5.
