One Injured in Mayville Pedestrian Accident

MAYVILLE – On Aug. 4, 2012, at approximately 12:50 a.m., the Middle Township Police Department responded to a reported pedestrian motor vehicle crash on US9, in the Mayville section of the Township. Upon arrival, officers found a 15 year old juvenile male with serious injuries in the grass off the roadway. Also on scene was the driver of the vehicle, Samuel Caraballo III, age 19, of Woodbine.
The investigation revealed the juvenile was skate boarding north on US 9. Caraballo was travelling south on US9, driving a 1998 Nissan Maxima, when he entered the northbound lane to pass a vehicle in front of him while in a passing zone. Caraballo struck the juvenile in the northbound lane. After striking the juvenile the vehicle left the roadway, and struck a utility pole. The juvenile was in the north bound lane of travel when he was struck.
The juvenile was flown to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center City Division and is still listed in critical condition. Caraballo was not injured. During the investigation, it was learned that Caraballo’s driver’s license was suspended. Based on the suspension, Caraballo was charged with 2C:40-22b, Causing Serious Bodily Injury During a Motor Vehicle Accident While Driving While Suspended, a crime of the 4th degree. He was also issued a motor vehicle summons for Driving While Suspended, and Driving After the Hours for a Provisional Driver. Caraballo was released on his own recognizance.
The investigation was conducted by the Middle Township Patrol Division and Major Crimes Unit. The Middle Township Fatal Crash Team, and a Detective from the Cape May County Prosecutors Office also responded. The police were assisted at the scene by Middle EMS, Medic 5 of AtlantiCare and the Court House Fire Department.
The investigation is still on-going.
