Lower Police Charge Woman with DWI After Bridge Head-on

By Al Campbell

COLD SPRING — On July 24 at 7:20 p.m., Lower Township Police Department received a report from the bridge tender on Middle Thorofare Bridge that reported a head-on motor vehicle accident near the tollbooth.
The bridge links Diamond Beach and this community on Ocean Drive.
Investigation on scene determined that Cheryl L. McConnell, 52, of Maple Shade was operating a Honda Civic eastbound on the bridge when she proceeded through the toll booth area, lost control and drifted to the right and hit a curb of the bridge.
The vehicle then drifted to the left across the westbound lane and struck the curbing on the left before striking a Jeep Grand Cherokee head-on, which was heading over the bridge.
A 17-year-old male from Holland, Pa was driving the Jeep.
The male drive told police that, after the impact, he observed McConnell leave her vehicle and throw two glass bottles over the side of the bridge into the water.
During the police investigation, traffic was backed up westbound to Garden State Parkway.
According to Lower Township police, McConnell sustained injuries as a result of the accident, and was transported to Cape Regional Medical Center by Lower Township Rescue Squad. A blood sample was drawn at the request of police.
McConnell was subsequently charged with driving while intoxicated and careless driving.
Patrolman C.J. Ryan and Patrolman Michael Majane investigated the accident.
