AVALON — Avalon police received a report of people yelling and screaming in the water off the 200 block of 22nd Street, Nov. 13 about 7:20 p.m. Five persons were saved.
Officers Stephen Bowers and Mark Glassford responded and were met by the caller William Lloyd, who had gone into the water on his Jet Ski to check on the people.
He reported that a small fishing boat had capsized and approximately five people were in the water. Avalon officers requested Avalon Rescue and Avalon Fire to respond for the rescue of those individuals in the water.
During that time, Lloyd and a juvenile, also from Avalon, took Lloyd’s personal boat and rescued all five people.
Officers reported that after speaking to the occupants of the boat, they learned that the driver of the boat throttled the engine to go back to the dock and, due to the number of people aboard, it took on water across the bow and then flipped over.
All five individuals were treated on scene by Avalon Rescue. The investigation was turned over to the New Jersey State Police Marine Division.
