Driver Charged with DWI After Hit and Run Accident

By Herald Staff

ERMA- On Friday, March 12 at approximately 6 a.m., Lower Township Police Communication Center received a 9-1-1 call from a resident in the 200 Block of Texas Avenue, reporting that her vehicle, a gold color, Chevy Mini Van, had been struck by another motor vehicle while it was parked in front of her residence.
The caller advised that the other motor vehicle then left the scene of the accident. Patrol Officers responded to the scene and noticed substantial damage to the rear of the parked mini van.
Officers also recovered pieces of the other motor vehicle including it’s front license plate. A check of that license plate revealed that it came back to the 100 Block of Tennessee Avenue in the Villas.
Officers responded to Tennessee Avenue and located the hit and run motor vehicle, a 1996 silver Saturn. The vehicle had sustained heavy front end damage and both the driver and front passenger’s air bags had deployed.
Officers received permission to enter the residence where the motor vehicle was parked and located a Christopher Sexton, 22, hiding in the laundry room of the residence.
Following additional investigation on scene, Christopher Sexton was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated. He was transported to the Lower Township Police Department for a breathalyzer test after which Sexton was charged with the following Motor Vehicle Violations:
Driving While Intoxicated
Careless Driving
Open Alcoholic Container in a Motor Vehicle
Leaving the Scene of an Accident
Failure to Report an Accident
Driving With a Suspended Driver’s License
Operating an Uninsured Motor Vehicle
In addition, a warrants check revealed that there was an active Traffic Warrant out of the City of Cape May Municipal Court for Sexton, with a $998 bail. Sexton was subsequently lodged in the Cape May County Jail in default of that bail.
The accident was investigated by Patrol Officers, Michael Perry and Kevin Lewis.
