Car Strikes Wires, Snaps Pole, Electric Out

By Lauren Suit

WILDWOOD — Shortly before 1 p.m. Sept. 14, an accident at the Wildwood Acme, 5300 Park Boulevard, caused a power outage throughout the island.
According to witnesses at Mulligans Sports Bar and Grill, a woman leaving the Acme parking lot reportedly drove her car into the guide wires, snapping the pole and pulled the transformers atop her vehicle.
“We heard the transformers popping all the way down at the marina,” said one couple.
“I think it even blew out that van’s window,” said another spectators as he pointed to a green minivan with its back window missing.
Members of the city’s Police Department performed crowd control at the busy parking lot/
“We don’t know what those wires will do,” said one officer as he waved onlookers back.
The unidentified woman remained trapped in her car until police and fire crews were certain that downed wires wouldn’t pose a threat.
After the woman left the car on her own power, she was greeted by friends, family and emergency personnel. The driver did not look seriously injured, just shaken by the incident.
No other injuries were reported.
No word on how long for power to be restored.
