Middle Sets Exemptions For Business Registration Fee

COURT HOUSE – In November Middle Township adopted a business registration ordinance as part of its compliance with a 2022 state law. The registration process aids the township in meeting the state requirement for registering certificates of insurance now required for businesses across the state. Part of that ordinance established an annual registration fee of $75.

At the Township Committee meeting on Monday, Feb. 5, the governing body introduced a change to the ordinance detailing a set of organizations that are exempt from the fee requirement.

The change specifies that entities that are “conducted or operate exclusively for religious, charitable, educational, or other beneficial non-profit purposes” are exempt. It goes on to say entities that provide “veteran services” or are “veteran-owned organizations” are also exempt form the registration fee.

The exempt organizations are still required to register with the municipality and to provide the required certificate of insurance as well as proof of nonprofit or veteran status.

This amendment to the township ordinance will come up for a public hearing and potential vote to adopt at the Monday, March 4, committee meeting.
