COURT HOUSE – Middle Township Committee introduced an ordinance Monday, Oct. 16, detailing the requirements for annual business registration with the township.

The process is a consequence of new state legislation that requires all businesses and residential rental units to carry liability insurance at a minimum level set by the statute. These entities must annually file proof of coverage with the municipality.

The requirement that municipalities track and enforce the state’s insurance requirement was a late addition to the legislation, leaving towns to develop ways to meet the requirement. Business registration allows the municipality to determine which entities must file proof of insurance as required by the state.

The ordinance sets an annual $75 registration fee.

The ordinance will come up for final reading, a public hearing, and a possible vote to adopt at the Monday, Nov. 20, committee meeting.
