Major Thoroughfare at 96th Street in Stone Harbor Under Construction

Major Thoroughfare at 96th Street in Stone Harbor Under Construction

By Vince Conti

STONE HARBOR – What is perhaps the busiest street in the borough of Stone Harbor will be under construction for the next three to four weeks.

96th Street between Third and Second avenues will be closed to traffic during working hours from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Vehicles will be detoured to 94th and 98th streets.

A single eastbound lane will be open during non-working hours. Following completion of work on Fridays, the road will be completely open until Monday morning. Sidewalks will remain open throughout the construction period.

The primary activity during this three-to-four-week construction period will be the replacement of the water main on 96th Street. The work is being done in an area of the roadway where the borough expects to find old underground railroad tracks that will be removed.

A second phase of work on 96th Street is planned for a mid-March start. It will include a reconstruction of the street with new paving and striping. Details on that work have not yet been released.
