The winter high school sports season has come to a close and so has our first official Cape May County Sports’ Player of the Week contest sponsored by William H. Panico, DMD.
Throughout the season, fans participated in a weekly poll featuring two outstanding athletes who were nominated for their performances based on the week’s contests.
Before we spring ahead to the new season, we will recognize those student-athletes who earned the coveted title of Cape May County Sports’ Player of the Week.
Wildwood High School’s Tyler Tomlin became our first Player of the Week for his work with the Warriors basketball team. Tomlin, a sophomore, led the team to their first victory of the season during the Boardwalk Basketball Classic Tournament. The Warriors won 43-39 over Oakcrest High School in that game.
In the next town over, Ashley Jackson of Wildwood Catholic High School earned herself the Player of the Week title for her performance with the Lady Crusaders basketball team. Jackson, also a sophomore, led the team with 15 points in a blowout win over Our Lady of Mercy Academy.
Lower Cape May’s Olivia Levin received Week Three Player of the Week for her role with the Lady Tigers basketball team. Levin, a junior, steered the Caper Tigers to a 60-28 win over Vineland High School. She scored a team-high 14 points in that game.
Week Four brought us Coley Holton of Middle Township boys’ basketball. The sophomore had a double-double in the Panthers’ 57-29 victory against Buena Regional High School. Holton scored 12 points and 10 rebounds in the game.
Cape May Tech’s Philicia London became our Week Five winner with her work on the Lady Hawks basketball team. In a game with Our Lady of Mercy Academy, the senior led the team with 15 points and six rebounds. The Hawks ended up winning, 41-28.
Wildwood senior Mackenzie McCracken earned Week Six Player of the Week for scoring a career-high 41 points in the Warriors’ 60-59 overtime win against Millville.
In Week Seven, Patrick Holden of Lower Cape May boys’ basketball won Player of the Week. Holden, a junior, led the Caper Tigers with a game-high 34 points in the team’s 66-53 win at rival Ocean City in overtime.
Tracey Young, of Wildwood, won Player of the Week for Week Eight with her performance with the girls’ basketball team. Young had 12 points and 17 rebounds in the Warriors’ 72-61 win against Salem.
Lower Cape May’s Marissa McGaffney won Week Nine with leading the Caper Tigers to a 54-37 victory over Atlantic City. McGaffney, a senior, had 14 points in the win.
Wildwood Catholic’s Ryan Legler won Player of the Week for Week Ten with the Crusaders’ boys’ basketball team. Legler, a senior, led the team with 15 points in the state tournament loss to Gill St. Bernard’s.
Ocean City’s Rosalia Daddi won Player of the Week for Week Eleven with her work on the girls’ basketball team. Daddi, a senior, had ten points and four rebounds in the Red Raiders’ playoff game against Ewing.
Lower Cape May wrestler Mike Yorio became Week Twelve’s Player of the Week for his individual performance on the Caper Tigers’ squad. Yorio, a senior, finished his final season with an impressive 32-6 record.
Khushbu Patel of the Middle Township became the final Player of the Week for the winter season. Patel holds multiple individual and team relay school records with the Panther girls’ swim team.
