VILLAS – The Lower Township Department of Parks and Recreation is expanding its youth programs to include a music lessons program.
The music program, called Rockin’ the Rec, will begin registration the first week in September and begin classes the first week in October, according to a release.
“I think it is a wonderful thing that the recreation department is trying to branch out from predominantly sport offerings,” stated Lisa Jurewicz, known to her students as Mrs. J, who will be instructing the music program.
Jurewicz will be giving guitar and piano lessons to students in fourth, fifth and sixth grades who have had no experience with guitar or piano.
“This is a class designed to give kids the opportunity to be introduced to an instrument and get their feet wet,” said Jurewicz. “This isn’t a class for someone that has been playing for a few years.”
Jurewicz said that she created a program that will focus on learning contemporary pop and rock songs.
The guitar 10-week session includes being introduced to parts of the electric guitar, playing guitar tab, open chords, power chords, and listening to selected rock music.
Students will be introduced to “Middle C” and “C” positions and playing simple, beginning songs on keyboards. Reading and music terminology will be included.
“I’m a firm believer that music is for everybody and at some point in their lifetime they should try an instrument,” stated Jurewicz, who was a music educator for over 20 years and still gives private lessons.
Students must choose one instrument per session and indicate Guitar or Piano on registration form.
All equipment and instruction is provided and instruments will remain onsite. All classes will remain a limited size to get the most out of instruction time.
The classes will be held at Millman Community Center,  209 Bayshore Road, Villas.
Registration will be held for students in grades 4, 5 and 6, Sept. 16 through Sept. 23 and is on a first come, first serve basis.
A per-child fee will be charged for the 10-week class. Guitar classes will be held on Wednesday evenings (two sessions) from 5 pm-6 pm and from 6 pm-7 pm at the Millman Center beginning Oct. 3.
Piano classes will be held on Thursday evenings (two sessions) from 5 pm-6 pm and from 6 pm-7 pm at the Millman Center beginning Oct. 4.
For information, contact the Lower Township Recreation Center.
Register for both programs at the Lower Township Recreation Center, behind Lower Township Hall in the municipal complex at 2600 Bayshore Road.
