Atlantic Cape Athlete Named ‘Woman of the Year’

By Press Release

MAYS LANDING — Atlantic Cape Community College softball player Chelsy Seelman, a Milmay native and graduate of Buena Regional High School, was named a Woman of the Year by the New Jersey Association for Girls and Women in Sports.
Women of the Year recipients were honored at the annual New Jersey National Girls and Women in Sports Day luncheon at Seton Hall University Feb. 1.
Seelman, 19, is a student at Atlantic Cape Community College majoring in general studies, and intends to pursue a bachelor’s degree in psychology upon graduation.
The sophomore is first baseman and captain of the softball team, with a batting average of .267 last season.
She was nominated by her softball coach, Sean Thomas, who praised her leadership and positive attitude. Seelman is very active in volunteering on campus, and most recently worked at the Atlantic Cape Adopt-a-School event in December for Charles Spragg Elementary School children. She also volunteered time at a senior citizens center while in Virginia this past summer.
Her other accolades include receiving Atlantic Cape’s first NJCAA All Academic Team Award for the 2014 softball team and being named All-Academic Garden State Athletic Conference and Academic All Region 2014.
“In my opinion, Chelsy is the ideal team leader. She’s a great player, but her contribution is much more than that. She’s an excellent student and she’s a positive role model for her teammates,” said Mike Rennick, assistant director of athletics.
Each year, the NAGWS presents the Woman of the Year award to one exceptional athlete from each college and university in the state for their achievements in athletics, academics and community service.
