MAYS LANDING — The Atlantic Cape Community College Archery Team competed in the 2018 United States National Collegiate Championships, May 17–21, on the campus of the University of Florida in Gainesville, Fla. More than 500 archers representing 50 different colleges from across the country participated in the competition.
Atlantic Cape Community College archer Kerri Byrne of Egg Harbor Township, All East Female Compound Archer, finished in 12th place after scoring several victories in individual elimination competition. Byrne, together with teammate Matthew Schreiber, of Mays Landing, who finished in 20th place in the Male Compound Division, finished in fourth place in the Mixed Compound Team competition, losing a tight back and forth battle with Emmanuel College in the Bronze Medal match. Atlantic Cape defeated Michigan State University in the Quarterfinals, and lost to Hocking College in the Semifinals.
Female Recurve archer Sarah Cordery, of Ocean City, entered the final day of elimination competition in 37th place. However, after scoring several head to head upsets, she finished in 25th place.
Cordery combined with teammate William Ebert, of Williamstown, who had finished in 42nd place in the Male Recurve division, to finish in ninth place in the Mixed Recurve competition, after losing their first round match to eventual champion Arizona State University.
In the Bowhunter Division, Alexandrea Obert, of Mays Landing, who switched to this type of bow two months ago to help field a complete team, finished in 20th place, after scoring an upset of a much higher ranked archery in the head to head elimination. Together with teammate Nicholas Derr. of Vineland, the Atlantic Cape Bowhunter Mixed Team finished in sixth place, after losing their Quarterfinal match to James Madison University. Nicholas Derr finished in 40th place in individual competition.
Atlantic Cape’s archery team is led by long-time archers Chad Affrunti, of Atco, and John Repnicki, of Galloway. The team has a history of success, producing more than 50 All-American archers and has won five National Team Championships.
