Kitchen Counter Top Questions Answered

By Sponsored Content

With the end of summer near, many homeowners are beginning to think about home improvement projects. If you are planning a kitchen project, consider universal design elements to allow easier access for all ages and abilities. Simple changes such as varying counter heights can make it easier and more convenient to prepare meals or clean up.
The standard height for a counter tops is 36” above the floor. While comfortable for most people, there are times when a lower or higher work surface is more advantageous. When chopping, dicing, or cutting foods, often a lower height of 30-34” is more comfortable. To determine the best height for your prep area, stand facing the counter and place your hands on the surface. Your forearms should be at a 45° angle to the work surface. When the grandchildren come to visit and you’re baking your famous pecan-chocolate chip cookies together, you’ll find mixing and prep easier for the little ones with a table height work surface. A 42-46” high bar top provides a great serving area or resting area for cooling off the chocolate sauce you made to drizzle on dessert.
Counter tops can also be hidden under cabinet mounted appliances as a pull-out landing area. Wall mounted microwaves and ovens with side hinged doors provide easier access for people of all abilities.
Don’t forget to provide a lower counter work surface with an open area underneath for someone to sit on a chair or wheelchair in needed. This can often be accomplished with a folding pocket door cabinet front that covers the opening when not in use.
Many modern kitchens also provide adjustable counter heights for work surfaces, kitchen sinks, and even electric cooktops. New kits include all the hardware and plumbing components to allow you to vary the height of a 30-96”long counter at the push of a button so you can raise or lower your sink, cooktop or counter 6-8” up or down. Now the grandchildren might even help wash the dishes!
