Christmas Tree Lit at Emlen Physick Estate

The Christmas tree at the Emlen Physick Estate on Washington Street

By Al Campbell

CAPE MAY – For the first time in many years, rain fell as the crowd counted down from 10 to one with Santa to light the star-topped Christmas tree at the Emlen Physick Estate Nov. 23.
As youngsters waited their turn to sit on the North Pole’s top resident’s lap in the gazebo by the tree after the lighting ceremony, adults lined up to tour the Physick Mansion and the nearby Carriage House.
Colorful lights brightened nearly every part of the Victorian-era estate on Washington Street, including the tall evergreens that were the backdrop for some selfies by the crowd of onlookers.
Trolleys lumbered into and out of the estate as they took wide-eyed riders on tours of the Victorian city as it prepared for another Christmas season by the sea.
