A common circulatory system problem affecting individuals of all ages is venous insufficiency, “Venous Reflux Disease.”
It occurs when one-way valves in the leg veins begin to fail and leak. This causes blood to pool in the legs and can lead to the development of large protruding leg veins, known as varicose veins. Other symptoms in the legs include leg pain, fatigue, skin itching and swelling. Severe cases can lead to permanent defects of the skin and venous leg ulcers. About 20-40 million Americans, both men and women, suffer from venous insufficiency. Common risk factors are occupations that require standing, family history of varicose veins, pregnancy, being overweight and age. Some affected individuals do not have any of these risks.
The diagnosis of venous reflux disease is made with physical examination and ultrasound testing. Advances in treatment include minimally-invasive office procedures for symptom relief and physical appearance.
One of the most effective treatments for venous reflux disease is the Closure® Procedure. This procedure treats abnormal veins with radio frequency (RF) energy. The RF energy is delivered through a catheter inserted into the diseased vein. This closes the vein down and moves it from the circulation. Results eliminate the venous reflux, relieve symptoms and often improve the appearance of the varicose veins.
It is a 30 minute procedure, performed in a comfortable office setting, usually with no incisions or sutures. General anesthesia is not required. Patients typically experience minimal discomfort and are able to return to their usual activities in a few days.
