MRSA Found in Middle Schools

By Al Campbell

COURT HOUSE — Two cases of MRSA, Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, were confirmed in the Middle Township School District about three weeks ago, according to Superintendent Michael Kopakowski.
This newspaper received a Spout Off that wondered why the two confirmed cases drew, seeming, little response from the district. It also stated that high school bathrooms often lacked soap and paper towels, a deterrent against the infection.
Kopakowski said he had met with the school nurse, athletic trainer, and principal regarding MRSA.
“I assure you, we are following the guidelines of the Cape May County Health Department and that of the CDC (Center for Disease Control),” said Kopakowski.
He said, according to the nurse, on whom he relies for health information, “This is no different than it was over the last three to five years.”
“These things happen, and the best defense is to wash your hands,” Kopakowski said.
Of the complaint of the lack of soap and towels, the superintendent said the custodial staff had been instructed to keep the soap filled and ensure there were towels or operational electric hand dryers in all bathrooms.
“We’ve taken an extra measure in the weight room and fitness center. We are cleaning them on a daily basis, and also making sure there are paper towels and disinfectant,” he said. “The students are being asked to wipe down the equipment they use, just as you would in a health club.”
“We have been told this is not an issue to close school. We have to report all cases to the county Health Department. As of now, those kids are not infected,” he added.
The district’s job, he said, is to explain to the students that they must be under a doctor’s care and orders. If they have seen a doctor, and their wounds are covered, then the nurse has to make sure of that, Kopakowski said.
“The germ will not stand up to soap and water,” he added.
He said that all staff members and teachers had been provided information about MRSA from the Center for Disease Control, so that they could answer any questions students might ask.
