COURT HOUSE – Middle Township residents are encouraged to take part in a new kind of neighborhood gathering March 27, as they continue to practice safe social distancing.
According to a release, the Middle Township Friday Night Front Porch Social (Distancing) Hour is the brainchild of Mayor Timothy Donohue, who first shared the idea on a new community Facebook page, “Middle Township CoronaVirus Info Group.”
The page was launched to celebrate Middle Township’s community ties while New Jersey remains under stay-at-home restrictions, and the 6 p.m. social hour was planned in that spirit.
“While we should be ‘physically’ distancing, we need to remain the vibrant, sharing, caring community that makes Middle Township so great!” Donohue stated in a Facebook post about the event. “Grab your favorite beverage and safely gather your fellow shelter-in-placers. We go to our porches – greet our neighbors (while, of course maintaining our distance). And raise a glass to us! We’re doing it. We’re getting there. See you on the porch.”
While social distancing is a new concept for New Jersey residents, porch parties are not. Front porches were the original form of social networking, bringing together neighbors and communities. And now, at a time when people are eager to get outdoors, Middle Township is using the power of porches to organize a lighthearted activity.
Neighbors who participate in the Social (Distancing) Hour are encouraged to snap selfies and other photos and post them on the Middle Township CoronaVirus Info Group Facebook page.
Middle Township residents are also reminded to check the township’s website at middletownship.com and follow the township’s official Facebook page at Facebook.com/MiddleTownship for regularly updated resources and information.
